Lion Dances, along with loud drumbeats and intense cymbal crashes, will reign throughout the joyous events. Peninsula Chicago rings in the New Year in spectacular style with unique décor, special music, food, and extraordinary activities for young and old alike. The festivities begin on Friday, January 24, at 2:30 p.m. and continue through the most fortunate day of the year, January 29th.

A special Chinese New Year Afternoon Tea will be served at 2:30 pm and 4:30 pm daily in The Lobby beginning on Friday, January 24th through Sunday, January 26th, 2025. The menu features distinctive, festive flavors, including traditional Chinese savory and sweet fare. A string duo provides entertainment. On Saturday, January 25th, guests will witness the annual Lion Dance in The Lobby during the 2:30 pm tea seating. The Chinese New Year Afternoon Tea is available for $150 for adults, including a glass of Champagne, and $85 for children ages 5 to 12, excluding tax and gratuity. Guests will receive the traditional red packet as a parting gift.

The lion is an auspicious animal in Chinese culture, representing power, wisdom, and superiority. The lion dance brings good fortune and chases away evil spirits. One of the most exciting events for families is the interactive lion mask-making activity in the library on Sunday, January 26th, from 11:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Chicago Peninsula staff will use a variety of crafts to guide children 3 to 12 in creating a celebratory lion mask to don in time for the New Year. The Shanghai Terrace offers specialized authentic Chinese dining delights. Shanghai Terrace’s signature entrée items include XO beef tenderloin, sweet & sour prawns, kung pao chicken, Shanghai fried noodles, New Year fried rice, and jade vegetables. Steamed halibut will be served table-side. For the first time ever, a Chinese New Year’s brunch on Sunday, January 26th, will be offered from 11:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The price is $188.00 plus tax and gratuity. The buffet features four stations: Dim Sum (my favorite), Peking Duck (Another fave), Entrees, and decadent desserts.
