6 Balloons” is inspired by the true story of Samantha Housman, the best friend, and co-producer of the director Marja-Lewis Ryan Marja considered the story needed to be told from the perspective of Abbi Jacobson (Katie) since there are many enablers who accommodate the addicted individual in order to protect them from facing the full consequences of their drug use. They try to temporarily ease the suffering of their loved one by helping them purchase and obtain their substances and even provide a venue for them to use the drug and cover up their addiction. The worse case is the personal position and feelings of an enabling family member and how their relationship with a loved one who is facing a drug dependency affects them causing burden, stress, and a terrifying guilt. The fact that the films “6 Balloons”  takes the viewers to the pain and stress felt by the enabler instead of the drug user makes this Netflix film so different.

Dave Franco lost 25 pounds in order to make a more realistic performance as a heroin addict; he said at SXSW Q & A that he almost lost his mind because he was only eating salads without dressing. Dave Franco does a wonderful job playing the role as an addict and he will be seen on “6 Balloons” as you have never seen him before playing a dramatic role instead of the comedy roles he has played in the past. He accurately expresses the withdrawal and horrible pain felt by a drug-addict to the extremely addictive substance of heroin.

The Netflix film is worthwhile to watch and the acting makes the film realistic and portrays flawlessly the pain of a family facing addiction.
